Santorini

In the summer of 2026 I visited Greece. After a few days in Athens we crossed to Santorini, a place I had only ever seen in other people’s photos. What I found there was more than a camera or a canvas could hold.

The towns climb the hills in layers, houses stacked and hanging off the edges of the cliffs as if each one were fighting for its own piece of the blue water below. Blue-domed churches sit among them, and bougainvillea spills pink over the white walls. I will not complain about the crowds, being one of the tourists myself.

This painting is my attempt to carry some of that beauty back to canvas and bring it home. It taught me more about shades of white and blue than anything else I have painted. I lost count of how many times I repainted it, somewhere past a dozen, and every pass was worth it.
